Q: I have all these red bumps on the backs of my upper arms, it almost looks like a rash or hives. I went to a dermatologist and they diagnosed it as something called "Karatosis Pilaris." It is a harmless condition but I can't get rid of them! Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to help?
A: Karatosis Pilaris is a common skin condition where keratin in the skin forms hard plugs within the hair follicles. It occurs
most often on people with very dry skin so the trick is daily exfoliation and moisturizing. We found a nifty product from Lush handmade Cosmetics that does both at once. It's called Buffy Body Butter and contains bits of rice, almonds & beans for exfoliation, and coca & shea butter for soft, moisturized skin. Or you can use Tijeras Organic Alchemy Body Washes, that come in natural fragrances and a Loofa the two products will have the same effect.
Your physician may have recommended skin-conditioning creams containing urea, lactic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or tretionion. All these help with cell turn-over and help sooth the skin. However, you have to be cautious in the sun while using such products, as you will burn more easily!
